International Truck and Engine, a subsidiary of Navistar
International, has announced that its 2010 emissions strategy will
not include SCR. As expected, the US truckmaker has decided to
focus on in-engine technologies, including EGR, to reduce levels of
NOx and particulates. International's SCR-free strategy will be
employed on its core applications - Class 4 to 8 trucks with
MaxxForce branded engines.
Industry experts had predicted that Navistar would pursue an
SCR-free emissions strategy for US2010. In fact, the company has
worked closely with SCR-sceptic MAN on the development of in-engine
technologies and EGR techniques. It is unclear whether this policy
will be extended to Navistar's new Class 8 MaxxForce engine
entering production in 2008. There have been recent rumours in the
industry press that MAN and Navistar are collaborating on a
US2010/Euro VI SCR system for heavy-duty applications. The new
Class 8 MaxxForce engine is Navistar's first venture into the US
heavy-duty engine market.
