General Motors (GM) has announced plans to launch its first
50-state compliant V8 diesel engine range by 2009.
The 4.5l V8 Duramax turbo-diesel engine is designed for use in
GM's heavier range of vehicles including pickups and the Hummer H2.
Use of the clean-diesel engine will increase fuel efficiency,
reducing emissions of CO2. The announcement comes as pressure
mounts on manufacturers, from both executive and legislative
branches of the US government, to improve fuel efficiency.
The planned Duramax V8 engine will use a high-pressure, common-rail
fuel injection system with an SCR NOx aftertreatment system and DPF
to curb emissions. GM claims that the use of advanced diesel engine
technology will increase fuel efficiency by 25% and decrease CO2
emissions by 13% (in comparison to equivalent petrol engine
vehicle). It should be noted that the use of combined SCR and DPF
will allow the Duramax V8 to meet both Tier 2 Bin 5 and LEV 2
emissions legislation, currently the world's most stringent
light-duty emissions legislation.
