In October 2008, Daimler's new range of Mercedes BlueTEC
light-duty diesel vehicles were awarded the "Qualified Alternative
Motor Vehicle Credit" by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
which qualifies buyers for up to $1,800 of tax credits, a status
previously only granted to hybrid-electric vehicles. To qualify for
the award Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC range underwent assessment by the
US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). BlueTEC was created by
Daimler as a brand name for cars, SUVs and heavy-duty trucks and
buses which employ NOx treatment systems, including SCR. The
Mercedes SUVs to employ SCR are the GL320 CDI, ML320 CDI and R320
CDI. The vehicles, which are the first diesel passenger vehicles to
meet 50 state emissions requirements, went on sale on October 1st
2008.
