Yara invests in North American urea facilities

Norwegian fertilizer giant Yara has spent CAD$1.6 billion (US$1.56 billion) on Canadian nitrogen producer Saskferco. The Canadian company is based in Belle Plain, Saskatchewan and boasts a granular urea production capacity just over 900,000 tpy. Air1, Yara's AdBlue subsidiary, is currently preparing for the launch of the EPA's 2010 legislation and this new Canadian urea production capacity will allow for the possibility of DEF production in North America. However, it is important to remember that Yara's purchase of Saskferco is primarily a strategic investment in fertilizer capacity.
