In the face of rising energy prices, Cummins has announced a dramatic shift in its US 2010 heavy-duty engine strategy. The US engine maker has announced that it will shift its focus from high volume EGR to the more efficient SCR aftertreatment technology. This decision will leave the Caterpillar/International alliance as the sole proponent of high volume EGR for the US 2010 heavy-duty market. Cummins' decision has put greater emphasis on SCR as the main choice for complying with the EPA's 2010 legislation, and the increased potential market share for SCR vehicles in a post-2010 USA will help convince urea infrastructure stakeholders that they will see a return on their investment.
