The US EPA has announced that it plans to test Cummins' diesel engines after the engine-maker confirmed its intention to use a copper zeolite SCR catalyst. The EPA contends that copper zeolite has the potential to produce dangerous carcinogenic dioxins. Copper zeolite has only recently become available for automotive applications, but it has proven to be exceptionally effective - providing more than 90 percent NOx removal. The EPA will conduct tests at the National Vehicle and Fuel Emission Laboratory.
