Mercedes-Benz South Africa is receiving orders for Euro V trucks ahead of any announcement on the timetable for the emissions standard's implementation, according to its product manager.
"Imperial Logistics has run four MBSA Euro V trucks with BlueTEC technology in its fleet for close to a year now as part of a pilot programme to see whether operating these machines delivered the promised reduction in emissions and fuel consumption," said Christo Kleynhans, adding: "Interest from other South African transport companies has now seen MBSA place an order for two Euro V trucks for a distributor and a retail group, with another six on their way to another company."
Euro II emissions standards came into force in January 2006 for new models, whilst existing models were required to comply by January 2010.
Kleynhans added that an increase in the availability of 50ppm diesel, which is necessary for Euro V trucks, over recent months has meant that MBSA feels comfortable to broaden its push of Euro V-compliant trucks into the local market.
MBSA's general product range on sale in South Africa is Euro III compliant.
