Scania confirms SCR for Tier 4

Swedish truck and engine manufacturer Scania confirmed that it will use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and AdBlue / Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to meet 2011 off-road emissions regulations.

Robert Sobocki, Senior Vice President of Scania Engines, told delegates at Integer's Diesel Emissions Conference in Frankfurt the decision was made to ensure synergy with future vehicle models:

"We realised we would need SCR technology to meet the 2014 regulations and the installation you make [for 2011 models] needs to reduce the need for modification and save money."

A key factor was the engines' ability to cope with high sulphur content of fuel found in some of the company's markets outside Europe and North America, said Sobocki, as an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), the alternative solution, would face degradation due to sulphuric acid condensation in these conditions.
