A large fire at chemical storage and processing plant Chemie-Pack in Moerdijk, Netherlands, has destroyed IBC and packaged AdBlue.
At 14:30 on 5 January 2011 a fire broke out at the company's storage building and spread to nearby offices of Wärtsilä. Over 250 fire fighters were called to control the blaze which was finally put out at midnight on the same day.
An inventory produced by Moerdijk's municipal authorities listed a tank containing 28 tonnes of AdBlue, 97 IBCs of AdBlue, 639 packs which each contained four five-litre jugs and 1,536 18 litre drums, among other AdBlue-related products.
Suppliers in the region have said that the AdBlue supply chain is sufficient to sustain the loss without any impact on customers, either in terms of availability or price.
In a statement a spokesperson for the company said: "Chemie-Pack is a family business for over sixty years an excellent reputation in the field of storage and processing chemicals. In the long history of the company have been no serious incidents as always just working under close supervision of various inspection bodies and licensing authorities."
Chemi-Pack houses over 100 tonnes of hazardous substances and authorities monitored the soot to ensure no dangerous elements had been released into the atmosphere. The cause of the fire is unknown.
