Five companies have come together to test the world's first on-board Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system on a low-speed marine diesel engine.
The SCR technology, built and implemented by Oshima Shipbuilding, has been fully tested on a new Nippon Yusen Kabushiki (NYK) bulk coal carrier, with support from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Akasaka Diesels, and Sakai Chemical Industry.
The tests were conducted as part of efforts to meet the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) Tier III NOx emission standards. The IMO first introduced the standards in Japan in 2005, and the most recently implemented (in 2010) aims to reduce NOx emissions by 20% of 2005 levels.
