Iveco launches new Euro V Stralis range Iveco launched its new-look Stralis heavy duty trucks (19-44 tonnes) in March 2007 but has decided not to offer a Euro 4 version to customers. Iveco has been selling Euro 5 Stralis trucks since September 2005 and has announced that its new range for 2007 will be fitted with the Euro 5 Cursor engines as standard. The company claims the Euro V Stralis trucks, which can be fitted with 8-, 10- or 13-litre engines, offer improved torque and durability and lower maintenance and operation costs, delivering a 2-5% fuel consumption saving compared with their Euro 3 predecessors. On-board diagnostic equipment is standard in the re-styled vehicles. To meet Euro IV and V emissions legislation, Iveco opted in favour of SCR technology for vehicles above 6.5 tonnes GVW (Eurocargo and Stralis trucks, and bus models) with Tector and Cursor engine ranges. EGR is employed in Iveco's smaller diesel engines, e.g., Daily vans, coupled with oxidation catalysts on smaller models and CRTs for larger vehicles (>5 tonnes GVW). Iveco and Indian vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which envisages cooperation between the two companies on commercial vehicle "engineering, manufacturing, sourcing and distribution of products, aggregates and components." If a strategic alliance of this nature is deemed feasible by a joint steering committee, definitive agreements between Iveco and Tata could follow in the coming months. Tata claims to be the world's fifth largest medium- and heavy-duty truck manufacturer and the second largest heavy bus manufacturer. A joint-venture agreement already exists between Tata and Fiat Auto to manufacture passenger cars, engines and transmissions for India and external markets. Tata has also entered joint-venture agreements with truck and bus manufacturers in Europe, Asia and South America. |
