Cummins: SCR not necessary for 2010

by Alistair Wallace on 24/09/2007, 2:12 PM

Cummins has signalled its intention to develop a US 2010 compliant heavy-duty engine without the use of an SCR aftertreatment system. The engine maker believes that it can use EGR to meet emissions targets without sacrificing power, torque and fuel efficiency.

Cummins' new engine range will use EGR, common-rail technology, extra-high pressure injection (XPI), variable geometry turbocharging (VGT) and DPF, essentially a modified version of the present US 2007 engine. However, this is not a 'whole line' solution, as Cummins will be using SCR coupled with EGR across its range of medium-duty engines.
