Navistar invests in "clean tech" firm Amminex.

by Laura Cross on 21/12/2009, 6:31 PM

As part of its ongoing efforts to find a practical alternative to liquid urea based SCR, Navistar has entered a long term agreement with Danish technology firm, Amminex. By acquiring a stake in the firm, Navistar hopes to employ a system that fits the company's favoured advanced EGR platform. Amminex has developed an ammonia storage and delivery system (ASDS) for passenger cars as well as heavier vehicle use, which utilises non-pressurised ammonia and saturated inorganic salt, compacted into a hand-sized cartridge - known as AdAmmine. Navistar's view that emission control responsibility lies with the manufacturer is reflected in this new product, which is replaced as a spare part during oil services.  Navistar's EPA 2010 compliant vehicles currently rely on the use of emission credits to offset the extra 0.2g/bhp-hr of NOx that the EGR MaxxForce engines account for. Navistar is hoping that the ASDS technology will bring its engines up to EPA standards.
